The Telkom Foundation, in collaboration with the Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Honourable Philly Mapulane, is proud to announce the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Cyber Lab at Refilwe Secondary School in Metsanangwana, Sekhukhune Area, Limpopo Province, on World Telecommunication & Information Society Day (WTISD), 17 May 2024.
World Telecommunication & Information Society Day, celebrated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) since 1969, serves to raise awareness about the transformative power of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and their potential to bridge societal divides. This year, World Telecommunication & Information Society Day will focus on the theme of "Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development," highlighting the crucial role of technology in driving socio-economic progress.
The Cyber Lab, a cornerstone of Telkom Foundation's Connected Schools programme, symbolises Telkom's commitment to empowering young South Africans with essential ICT skills. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the Cyber Lab aims to transform the educational experience for learners and educators at Refilwe Secondary School, preparing them to thrive in an increasingly digitised world.
"At Telkom, we believe that connectivity is the key to South Africa's digital future. Through initiatives like the Telkom Foundation's Connected Schools Programme, we are actively bridging the digital divide and unlocking opportunities for young learners across the nation. The inauguration of the Cyber Lab at Refilwe Secondary School underscores our unwavering commitment to building a digitally inclusive society," states Judy Vilakazi, Head of Telkom Foundation.
Echoing the need for further initiatives of this nature, Honourable Philly Mapulane, Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, emphasises, "Public-private partnerships play a pivotal role in ensuring that South Africa remains at the forefront of digital innovation. As we celebrate 30 years of Democracy, initiatives like the Telkom Foundation's Cyber Lab exemplify the collaborative efforts needed to create a future-ready South Africa. By investing in education and technology, we are laying the foundation for a prosperous and equitable society."
Since its inception in 2017, the Connected Schools programme has positively impacted over 7,000 high school learners and educators across 21 schools in Eastern Cape and Gauteng. By providing access to digital labs in rural communities and offering comprehensive academic support, the programme is empowering the next generation of South African leaders with the skills they need to succeed in the digital age.
The Telkom Foundation is spearheading the comprehensive connectivity initiative within the school premises, encompassing the computer lab, staffroom, and entire school through strategically positioned WiFi access points. Furthermore, Telkom is furnishing the school with essential furniture and facilitating seamless connectivity through a dedicated Microwave 200Mbps contract spanning 24 months.
