Telkom announced today that it will pay each SPAR Proteas player R200 000 for their admirable showing at the recent Netball World Cup, held earlier this month in Liverpool.
Initially Telkom had pledged to pay R1 000 000 per player for a SPAR Proteas Netball win of the Netball World Cup in Liverpool and R500 000 per player for a silver medal.
Although the team didn’t make it to finals, the SPAR Proteas netball team showed a winning spirit as they reached the semi-finals for the first time in 24 years of the tournament to finish in the top four.
"We are very proud of their performance and we salute each of the team members, coaching staff and management, for flying the South African flag high and giving every girl child hope that it is possible to make it big in this sport," said Telkom Brand and Product Segments Executive, Gugu Mthembu.
This is not the first time that Telkom has shown its support and investment to Netball. This year, Telkom was announced and unveiled as the new partner to Netball South Africa. This resulted in the league being officially known as the Telkom Netball League. A local league that saw 10 teams from nine provinces competing for the prestigious prize of being crowned the best.
