Telkom today announced that it will provide five percent additional IP connect capacity to all existing IP Connect wholesale customers at no additional cost, with effect from 1 October 2013.
The South African fixed broadband market is currently experiencing exponential growth in data usage and Telkom expects that this data demand will continue to climb in the coming years.
To this end, the Company has commenced a network investment and transformation programme focused on increasing fixed broadband access speeds. This is evidenced by Telkom’s launch of 20 and 40 Mbit/s VDSL services and the increased rate of deployment of the Multi Service Access Node units across the country that enable these services.
Telkom endeavours to dynamically capacitate the fixed broadband eco-system ahead of expected demand, including but not limited to port capacity, backhaul to fixed broadband nodes and Telkom’s IP network.
"We have decided to take this step because of the exponential growth in broadband data usage and in support of our aggressive next generation network investment programmes," says Telkom's Managing Director of Wholesale and Networks, Mr Bashier Sallie.
Telkom notes that this decision is independent of the stipulations in the Company's settlement agreement with the Competition Commission. The Company remains committed to the implementations of the agreement and announcements in this regard will be made in due course.
