Telkom urges customers to take precautionary measures over the weekend due to the high levels of rainfall expected.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS) heavy rains are expected over North West, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The adverse weather is expected from today and will continue until Sunday.
"There have already been heavy rains experienced over parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo earlier this week and rivers in these areas are running high. These two provinces run the highest risk for flooding this weekend," said the SAWS.
The Company understands the great inconvenience disconnection of its services brings to its customers and will be on extra high alert during this period, mobilising all available technicians to work additional hours.
Affected customers can reach Telkom to report their problems via four channels:
The period of January to May is considered the heavy rainfall season and the same fault reporting methods can be used during this time.
Telkom stands prepared to diminish the network related faults that inevitably come with heavy rains and electrical storms. However, customers are urged to unplug all electronic devices, especially computers and modems, to avoid damage from harmful power surges during electrical storms.
Electrical power surges caused by lightning may damage computer components with excessive voltage. Modems are especially susceptible, because a harmful power surge can reach the modem in two ways - through the electrical power grid and through the telephone line to which the modem is connected.
Customers are advised that when there is a thunderstorm, not only should all power supply cables be unplugged, but also any telephone cables that are connected to the computer.
Gauteng, in particular, is predisposed to heavy rains as well as a high water table often resulting in the flooding of underground infrastructure such as man holes. Flooding in man holes not only causes faults but also restricts workmen from accessing the fault zone.
