Telkom's services in the Stormill exchange area in Johannesburg have been disrupted after a contractor, working for a third party, badly damaged four major cables during construction.
While working at an intersection in the area, the contractor drilled through Telkom's infrastructure, disrupting the services to 1078 residential, business and corporate lines. Telkom will have to replace 816 metres of cable to restore the services.
The incident has been reported to the South African Police Service and Telkom will institute legal action against the contractor.
The services of customers with the exchange codes 473 and 474 in the Industria West and Riverlea areas have been affected.
"We have commenced restoration to the affected services and have deployed several teams who will work shifts to expedite the repair process. The services will be restored progressively until close of business on 8 August 2012," says Theo Hess, Telkom Managing Executive for Network Field Services.
"We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this outage and we assure our customers that we are doing everything possible to restore these services as quickly as possible," concluded Mr Hess.
