The heavy downpours and flooding caused by the passing of cyclone Irina has caused major problems in Kwa-Zulu Natal causing floods, damage to roads and infrastructure and in many parts of the province disruption to Telkom’s telecommunications service.
“Fortunately the full might of the cyclone was not felt on South African shores – however the associated inclement weather has severely affected our response and restoration time,” says Mr Theo Hess, Telkom’s Managing Executive for Network Field Services.
The damage caused to roads due to flooding makes it increasingly difficult for Telkom’s technicians to access sites where services have been disrupted.
"Our outdoor infrastructure, such as overhead cables, has been damaged by fallen trees and flooded manholes cannot be accessed to resolve faults."
Moreover, explains Mr Hess, local authorities have prevented Telkom staff from entering certain areas owing to hazardous conditions.
The worst hit areas include Durban Central, Verulam, Hibberdene, Umhlanga, Umdloti, Pinetown, Phoenix and Mount Edgecombe. Residential, business and wholesale customers have been affected in these areas.
"Telkom is closely monitoring the situation and will do everything possible to restore services as expeditiously as possible. We are mobilising all available technicians to work additional hours to resolve all outstanding faults," says Mr Hess.
"Telkom remains committed to overcoming these challenging conditions to get our customers connected to their services as soon as possible," he concludes.
