Premier ICT conference looks to the future

Africa's top ICT conference, the annual Southern Africa Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC), will focus on new technology developments and emerging global trends.

Hosted by Telkom, SATNAC 2010 will take delegates to the leading edge of ICT development under the theme: "The Future − a Society Enabled by Innovation and Applications".

Minister of Science and Technology, Ms Naledi Pandor, will deliver the opening address and Telkom's acting Group Chief Executive Officer, Jeffrey Hedberg, will deliver a Keynote Address.

Other keynote speakers include Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive Officer at Alcatel-Lucent, who will deliver an address entitled "Building bridges in a new reality" and Phumlani Moholi, Chief IT&T Officer for the FIFA 2010 World Cup Organisation, who will provide insight into what it took to host a successful event.

A limited number of seats are still available at the conference, which will be held at Spier Estate in the Western Cape from 5 to 8 September.

Over 350 delegates had already registered for the conference, accounting for about 80% of available space.

"We can take a further 60 registrations and we will be at 100% capacity," said Conference Chairman Marius Mostert. "Bookings are coming in fast, so those who want to secure a place will have to register quickly."

Due to the large sponsorship of the event, the Local Organising Committee has kept conferencing rates very low and has prepared packages which include conference registration and accommodation.

All registrations have to be completed online (www.satnac.org.za). Information on hotel accommodation can also be found on the website.

SATNAC is an excellent networking forum for the telecoms industry, as many key industry leaders attend the conference.

The conference provides a platform for industry, academia and operators within the Information Communications and Technology (ICT) sector to share views on key challenges facing the industry, and to discuss the progress achieved in applied research. Several post-graduate students and students from the 16 Telkom Centres of Excellence will also present their research projects.

The conference starts with a Welcome Function on Sunday evening. The traditional icebreaker golf day will begin at 09:30 on Sunday at the Somerset West Golf Course.

Summit TV, the official broadcast partner for the conference, will broadcast the plenary sessions live and will also broadcast a highlights package in the week after the conference. Summit TV is available on DSTV Channel 412.

CNBC will broadcast short snippets every day for a week following the conference and a 30 minute special on SATNAC. CNBC is available on DSTV Channel 410.

Telkom has also teamed up with Rhodes University to stream the plenary sessions live on the Internet.

  • W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), a 3G next generation network, including fixed voice services, data services and nomadic voice services;
  • mobile communication services, including voice services, data services and handset sales through our mobile navbar-brand called Telkom Mobile;
  •  information and communication services including cloud services, infrastructure services, workspace services, global service integration management and hardware and network equipment sales locally, in seven African countries, the UK and Dubai through Business Connexion Group; and
  • other services including directory services, through Trudon (Pty) Ltd, wireless data services, through Swiftnet (Pty) Ltd.
